In response to external factors – the increasingly globalised world (demonstrated, for example, through the emergence of trading regions such as the European Economic Community and the NAFTA agreement) as well as the revolution in information exchange – the network put in place a more formal structure by appointing the first Kreston CEO, Chris Flint. As accountancy firms spread their practices to newer markets, the notion of harmonisation was replaced by the concept of convergence—the development of a unified set of high-quality, international accounting standards that would be used in at least all major capital markets. By this time, many tasks were becoming automated and computers were used by the majority of businesses. The network also embraced the digital opportunities of the era, creating its first ever website and launching the Kreston Worldwide Communications System, an innovative online hub providing news to members worldwide.
