Member Alex Picot updates on Jersey’s tax transparency position
November 28, 2017
Kreston’s member firm in Jersey, Alex Picot Trust have announced that Jersey Finance, the body that represents and promotes Jersey as an international financial centre has reinforced Jersey’s position on tax transparency.
Derek Rhodes, Director at Alex Picot Trust commented:
“Jersey is a highly regulated jurisdiction yet recent media coverage around the Paradisde Papers has perhaps underminded this reputation. We wanted to share this update from Jersey Finance about the recent OECD (The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) recognition with our colleagues as it relates directly to Jersey’s commitment to transparency. Jersey has received ‘fully compliant’ status where the UK and USA received ‘largely compliant’. If any Kreston members have questions about Jersey or the services that Alex Picot Trust can offer their clients they are welcome to contact me.”
In a recent communication, a spokesman for Jersey Finance said:
“We are delighted that the OECD has confirmed that Jersey is ‘fully compliant’ with all global standards of international tax transparency. It is an unequivocal endorsement both of Jersey’s world-class tax transparency framework and its ability to make sure that this framework is working well in practice. For Jersey to have been found to be entirely compliant in every single area is a fantastic achievement, underlining our commitment to combatting financial crime and tax abuse. Endorsements such as this from the OECD help us to reaffirm Jersey’s role as a premium international finance centre.”

November 15, 2017
Working together for success in a rapidly changing market for professional services as we develop our global network to deliver growth in profits and value for all member firms.
This was certainly true of our programme at Kreston’s annual conference, which this year was held at the Sofitel Resort, Cambodia over 7 – 12th November where 106 delegates and 34 companions attended from 60 countries.
Kreston Chairman, Bent Kofoed welcomed all to the start of the AGM and business sessions and Director of Quality and Professional Standards, Andrew Collier provided an update on the network’s current strategy.
Our keynote this year was internationally recognised business strategist Graeme Codrington, who specialises in the future of work. Over two highly thought provoking and entertaining sessions, Graeme presented on topics that will have a major impact on our future success, “Future-focused leaders”, which explored how smart leaders need to keep ahead of change by building and then adapting a future focused skill set; and ‘Making the most of your Millennials’, a fascinating insight into the young workforce of today and how technology is the ‘norm’ for them in all aspects of everyday life. Graeme highlighted how we can all maximise on the opportunities Millennials can deliver and the rewards available to success once they are fully integrated into the business environment.
Other guest speakers were Mike Whitten from accounting software provider Inflo who gave an insight into how technology is transforming the accounting profession and Ben Bush from The Frameworks, updated all on their work to date concerning Kreston’s Knowing you brand strategy. Part of the programme was devoted to member presentations including those given by Board Directors Rich Howard from MHM, Sunil Goyal from Kreston SGCO and Clive Stevens and Andrew Griggs form Kreston Reeves who updated all on the developments in their firms and their respective countries.
Bent commented:
“The 2017 World Conference in Cambodia was a great success. The interaction between members was strong as always and the business programme very interesting. The farewell dinner at the temples of Angkor will live in our minds forever.”
Jon Lisby, Kreston CEO said
“It is excellent that so many of our members took the opportunity to travel to such a fascinating country as Cambodia and to enjoy our business and social programme. To network with Kreston colleagues at an event, such as our annual conference, is a great way to build trusted relationships, which in turn drives additional referral business.”
Social events included a grand tour of famous Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm Temple; an exciting and competitive team building event around the streets of Siem Reap; A visit by boat to Tonle Sap Lake and the floating villages and an unforgettable final exclusive dinner within the temples of Angkor, a unique experience.
The 47th Kreston International Conference, “Winning the Revolution” will take place in New Orleans 17th – 21st October 2018.

Is globalisation going digital?
November 7, 2017
To say that there’s been a backlash against globalisation in recent years would be an understatement. From demonstrations in France and Germany, to President Trump’s pledges to renegotiate or withdraw from global trade deals, some of the world’s most influential countries have taken significant steps to bring their global output back in-house.
But despite this potentially seismic shift, the globalisation genie can never really be put back in the bottle. It’s more the case that globalisation is evolving. A recent Harvard Business Review article highlights that while the growth of global trade – and the flow of capital across borders – isn’t at the level it once was, the role of data in driving the global GDP is rapidly on the rise. Research from McKinsey Global Institute last year suggested data accounted for 35.9% of the world’s $7.8 trillion GDP in 2014.
It has long been the consensus that those who have benefited most from globalisation are the multi-national corporations. But this new “digital globalisation” seems to level the playing field, granting new opportunities to SMEs. Thanks to platforms such as Amazon, small businesses can turn themselves into “micro multinationals“, able to offer their goods and services to a global marketplace and compete with the industry juggernauts. This sentiment is echoed by Alibaba CEO Jack Ma, who commented: “The rules of globalisation were decided only by a certain number of big global corporations but now thanks to ongoing digital transformation, the power will not stay in the hands of big enterprises only but it’ll be shared with small and medium size firms as well”.
It’s just not businesses that are recognising the opportunity – Estonia is a nation at the forefront of digital globalisation. Its e-Residency initiative enables people to register an EU-based company from anywhere in the world, complete with a business bank account. Speaking to City A.M., Chief Information Officer for the government of Estonia Siim Sikkut stated: “Digital initiatives like e-Residency are crucial tools for realigning the role of government in the Information Age”.
Here at Kreston, we too are making our clients aware of the opportunities that digital globalisation presents – ensuring they have the knowledge, insights and expertise they need to negotiate the different cultural, financial and tax systems of whichever geography they operate in. Former United Nations General Secretary Kofi Annan once noted, “It has been said that arguing against globalisation is like arguing against the laws of gravity”. However, it would seem that those laws are now ready for updating and reinterpretation. And Kreston can help your business stay at the forefront of this new age of globalization.
