The switchover deadline from HMRC’s current customs IT platform, CHIEF (Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight) to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) is fast approaching. Kreston Global VAT expert Christine Newitt, VAT Director at Duncan & Toplis, has been sharing her thoughts with AAT on the upcoming changes.
How businesses can transition from CHIEF to CDS
The deadline for import declarations ends on 30 September 2022, with export declarations closing on 31 March 2023. Christine has 3 main points of advice for businesses adjusting to the new system;
- Appoint a CDS-compliant customs agent, freight forwarder or fast parcel operator.
- Investigate potential CDS-compliant declaration software here
- Use the HMRC ‘Trader Dress Rehearsal’ service
